In a Coffs Harbour first, this year’s International Day of People with Disability (IDPWD) on Monday, December 3, will be a community celebration of ability to which everyone is invited.
Events will include a Theatre Presentation by the Special Needs Actors Group, a Zumba Display by Pauline Weller and Coffs Harbour Support Service and a Q&A session with Scott Doolan, the first paraplegic climber to reach Everest Base Camp. In addition, a new art award will be presented for an artwork based on the theme of ‘What Disability Means to Me’. The celebrations will be held in City Square from 11am.
“International Day of People with Disability is an important day in the calendar,” said Coffs Harbour Mayor, Councillor Denise Knight, who will open the event. “It’s not only about raising awareness about issues related to disability, but more importantly, it’s about celebrating ability.
“This year’s theme is ‘Empowering persons with disabilities and ensuring inclusiveness and equality’ – sentiments that I support wholeheartedly.
“The Day provides an excellent opportunity to acknowledge the contribution that people with disabilities make to our community and to recognise those who play an important role in the lives of people with disabilities.
“Everyone is welcome to come along and share in the celebrations. See you there!”
