Everyone is invited to come along to the ‘Toormie’skate park on December 17 for an awesome day of skating, creative graffiti art, hula hooping, free BBQ and the chance to talk about what people want to see happen in that space in the future.
The day also marks a celebration of the resurfacing of the skate park which was carried out by Council as the first phase of a programme of upgrades. Rideable seating, a water bubbler, picnic tables and new bins are also due to be installed soon.
The event is the product of a very positive partnership of community stakeholders, Council, the Department of Family and Community Services (FACS) and youth-related services.
“Partnership and working together are some of my favourite words and this project has gathered immense support and goodwill from right across Toormina and beyond,” said Coffs Harbour Mayor Councillor Denise Knight, who will be at the event.
“Everyone is right behind getting engaged with the local youth and finding out what they want for their space. This is an exciting project and one that I believe will make a real difference.”
A two-pronged approach is being used for the project, which includes the renewal of the Toormina skate park by Council and the roll-out of a range of community programmes to engage young people by other local organisations.
The Day will include:
- 10am to 11am: Skate Coaching Clinic with the Popsgood Skateboard Store for those new to skating or want to learn more and Skate Comp registration.
- 11am to 2pm: Skate Comp (U16s and Opens).
- Graffiti Workshop with Ash Johnston from Open Studio throughout the event.
- Free BBQ by the Rotary Club of Sawtell and fruit. All the food will be supplied by various stores at Toormina Gardens.
