Every year, the judging of Coffs Harbour Regional Gallery’s still life prize attracts some degree of controversy and mixed responses from ‘My kid could’ve done that’ to ‘Is that really still life?’
But this year, the Coffs Harbour community has the opportunity to vote for the artwork they believe to be the best of the finalists in the STILL: National Still Life Award.
“Everyone is very welcome to come in and vote for their favourite artwork in the run-up to the official opening on November 25,” said Gallery Curator Jo Besley.
“The winning artist will receive the inaugural People’s Choice Award of $5,000, which will be announced at the official opening.”
The gallery will be open for an exhibition preview and People’s Choice voting at the following times:
- Thursday November 23, 3-6pm.
- Friday November 24, 10am-6pm.
- Saturday November 25, 10am-2pm.
On November 25, the $20,000 main STILL Award – judged by Lisa Slade, Assistant Director Artistic Programmes at the Art Gallery of South Australia – will also be announced.
A total of 63 artists have been shortlisted for STILL, Australia’s only award for works of art in the still life genre in all mediums. The shortlisted artworks include painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, ceramics, glass, sculpture, video, printmaking and textiles.
Artists from all states and the ACT, and at all stages of their careers, are represented among the finalists.
The new-look STILL Award has attracted strong support from local sponsors, with Mercedes Benz Coffs Coast the Major Sponsor and Slater & Gordon, Saso Creative and Moving Art the Award’s Supporting Sponsors.
