Fines totalling $10,500 have been issued for the illegal dumping of rubbish in the Nana Glen and Bucca areas.
As a result of ongoing investigations into several illegal dump sites, Council Rangers identified a number of people responsible for dumping household and building rubbish including household furniture, appliances, whitegoods, household garbage, builders waste and some hazardous materials.
To date, the investigations have led to seven residents being issued with penalty infringement notices ranging from $250 to $2,000 each. Investigations are continuing with more fines likely to be issued.
“Under the Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997, fines for this type of illegal dumping can be up to $2000 for an individual and $4000 for a corporation. If there is a prosecution, fines can be as high as $250,000,” said Robert Percival, Council’s Section Leader Compliance Regulatory Enforcement.
“Council regularly receives complaints regarding illegal dumping, particularly in rural areas, and we are cracking down on the problem.
“When one person dumps waste somewhere it can lead to an influx of people adding to the piles. But a lot of dumped items can be disposed of free of charge at the Englands Road Waste Management Facility such as whitegoods, scrap metal, household quantities of motor oils, batteries, paints, light globes and gas bottles.
“Illegal dumping is not just unsightly, it is hazardous to the environment and our community, and the clean-up comes at a high cost to Council and thus ratepayers.”
